Responsible Business Week Education Event: Improving outcomes through evidence based solutions

Through a series of workshops and a panel session, we will take delegates through the latest evidence-based solutions across issues such as building resilience, embedding science capital and ensuring all young people build the skills needed for an ever-changing workplace

In the UK, 3.7 million children, 30% of the total number of children, live in poverty. Evidence shows that young people who grow up in poverty are less likely to succeed, at school and then at work.

Education is our greatest opportunity to break this cycle, and business can play a major role in supporting schools and young people, to ensure that every young person, especially those facing disadvantage, succeeds in education and has a successful and happy working life. 

What the day will include
The event will feature a panel discussion chaired by Business in the Community's CEO Amanda Mackenzie. The panel will include:

  • Roisin Murphy, Head of CR, KPMG LLP
  • Mick Halloran, Director External Affairs, Capital One
  • Tom Ravenscroft, CEO, Enabling Enterprise
​Who will discuss the great skills challenge and how we can prepare young people for the businesses of the future. This will be followed by an overview of how they have used evidence to support them in developing solutions to these challenges. Delegates will also gain an understanding of what each organisation is doing and the impact that this having across key stakeholders, young people, teachers and parents. This session will be followed by a Q&A and then move onto an introduction to our 3 workshops as detailed below.  

You will have the opportunity to attend one of the three workshops below and on confirmation of your place we will ask you to indicate your preference – they will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Workshop 1: Primary matters when it comes to building skills
Employer engagement in education, on the main, focusses on supporting secondary schools. If we are to ensure that young people build the skills they need for the future we need more employers to work with our primary schools and embed these ideas earlier.

Workshop 2: Careers – a word that means a thousand things but what does work?
The government launched their career strategy at the end of 2017 outlining their intention that every young person has at least one employer engagement every year they are in education. That is a minimum of seven interventions for every pupil in schools across England.

Much work has been done in the area of careers but not all of it is delivering impact for young people or indeed business and if we are to close the skills gap we need to ensure that more activity is focused on what works.

Workshop 3: Tech skills – surely robots will take care of this?
The future of the world of work is surrounded by discussions of the increased need for tech skills and the threat of robots replacing the need for people power. We do not know what the young people who are in education today will be doing when they enter the workplace of the future. So how can we prepare them for an ever-changing world of technology and ensure they have the resilience needed to face this change?
