Digital Champions Network Commitment Summary

Each of the Business in the Community Digital Champions are making public commitments to ensure that their digital transformations are responsible, inclusive and sustainable, in line with the four priorities laid out in the Brave New World report

Outlined below is information about how the Digital Champion companies are on track to achieve one priority succesfully and how they are stretching themselves to achieve a second.
Success: 1. Protect, support and empower customers
Accenture is on track to achieve its global goal of skilling 3 million people by 2020, supported by a $200m investment, which aims to support disadvantaged individuals in gaining employment or building a business. To date Accenture has supported over 2.8m people, including more than 25,000 people via its free, online UK Digital Skills programme. Through the new Inclusive Future of Work initiative, Accenture commits to expanding its community investment programme to apply not just to young people looking for their first step on the career ladder, but also to experienced workers in less complex roles, who are at risk of displacement due to disruptive technologies such as automation and artificial intelligence.
Stretch: 3. Deliver innovative products and services that serve society
Accenture will explore the positive and negative implications of implementing artificial intelligence (AI), and work to implement solutions with clients and partners that are designed responsibly and ethically to ensure the full potential of AI is reached and shared by all. In the UK specifically, Accenture will drive mindfulness and action on Accenture’s global Responsible AI initiative and seek opportunities to locally apply new methodologies and tools in this space, for example through the Responsible AI Launchpad, part of which includes the Fairness Tool, which has two quantitative methods of mitigating bias to allow for human centric decisions


Success: 3. Deliver innovative products and services that serve society
Anglian Water commits to provide case studies and learnings from its innovative engagement and water efficiency interventions such as “turn off the tap” project completed in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline and the University of East Anglia. In addition Anglian Water commits to continue developing cross-industry partnerships such as Keep it Clear & Smarter Drop that will benefit society through promoting sustainable behaviours that benefit all.

Anglian Water commits to working with the Digital Champions network to learn from others on how we can create a shift from an industrial era mindset to a digital era mindset. It is a key priority for us to increase our ability to deliver value through the exploitation of information and technology in order to better serve the communities who rely on us and protect our natural environment. We know that we cannot do this without our people. Changing mindset alone is not sufficient, we commit to improve both our desire and ability to be digital.

Arm Ltd
Success: 2. Embrace the changing nature of work
Arm commits to providing a full complement of free engineering courseware through the Arm University Program (AUP) for use at over a 1000 universities that teach engineering to prepare the next generation of engineers worldwide. The AUP courseware is developed with Arm’s partner ecosystem to help academics establish baseline curricula that use state-of-the-art Arm and partner technology as a teaching aid while keeping the focus on engineering concepts and the pedagogy involved. To help the wider community of aspiring and professional engineers as well as students beyond the classroom, Arm Education Media (AEM) complements the AUP courseware by providing physical textbooks, e-textbooks and online resources..

Arm commits to grow the 2030Vision partnership it founded to unite the technology sector with NGOs, governments and academics to deliver technology solutions to support the UN Global Goals. They aim to recruit new corporate Partners who commit to engage in delivering positive impact for the Goals through digital technology. Furthermore they aim to demonstrate the social and commercial opportunities for the technology sector inherent in the Goals and the benefits of partnership working by launching cross sector exemplar digital projects.
Success: 3. Deliver innovative products and services that serve society
Fujitsu commits to announcing a targeted Digital Co-creation Challenge to public sector organisations that deliver citizen services across eco-systems of delivery organisations. They will also select three focus challenges to co-create Beta solutions with stakeholders, and invite alliance partners, SMEs, academia and the third sector to participate using open innovation to solve the challenges.
Stretch: 4. Drive a transparent, inclusive and productive value chain
Fujitsu commits to source and use 100% renewable energy across operations by 2050 (40% by 2030), as well as their recycling operation being committed to zero waste to landfill. As part of this, Fujitsu has been awarded “Best Large Company Carbon Management” at Carbon Trust’s Corporate Sustainability Summit. They also commit to driving a more responsible value chain by creating a “Responsible Procurement Charter”, working with suppliers to ensure the Charter’s principles flow through their own supply chains, and by using their new “OneERP” tool to introduce new standardised processes and improve ways of working for both customers and suppliers.

Oracle commits to support organisations as to how the human workforce can use automation to elevate its focus to higher value activities, whist machines focus on more repetitive processes and tasks, by delivering training and thought leadership for those in specific roles at high risk of automation. Additionally, they commit to helping organisations to realise some of the opportunities of digital technologies, such as AI increasing labour productivity or smart agriculture improving the way we farm and reduce waste, by offering a free Innovation Discipline programme to prototype solutions for customers.

Oracle commits to using its technology to support the World Bee Project to drive the entire business ecosystem towards one that supports pollinator and farmer prosperity, human wellbeing and national economies. By connecting a network of hives, Oracle is enabling researchers to solve issues such as Colony Collapse Disorder by being able to analyse many data points, ranging from temperatures, swarming behaviours and even sounds and movements, from across different locations, ecosystems and climates for the first time.
Success: 2. Embrace the changing nature of work
PwC commits to addressing the societal issue of female under-representation in technology. By 2020 they aim to grow membership of the Tech She Can Charter from 50 member organisations to 300. The Charter sets out to educate and inspire school girls and boys towards tech careers, making the sector more inclusive so that technology works for more of society as a whole. PwC will raise awareness of the case for diversity in technology, collaboratively developing inclusive and female-friendly educational lesson plans suitable for all UK schools. They will also encourage women in technology roles at PwC and the wider Tech She Can members to become inspirational role models.

PwC commits to extending their impact UK-wide by collaborating with other Tech She Can signatories to deliver on three key areas that will build a sustainable and inclusive technology talent-base to help position Britain at the forefront of responsible innovation. They will work with educators and policy-makers to ensure the technology curriculum is more inclusive, roll out inspiring yet practical lesson plans that bring the technology curriculum to life in every school in the UK, create a campaign which overhauls the image of working in technology so it appeals to a broad range of people and develop showcase materials for Business in the Community to communicate inclusive digital practices.
Rolls Royce
Success: 2. Embrace the changing nature of work
Alongside increasing their commitment to reach six million people in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by 2020 to 25 million by 2030, Rolls-Royce pledges to sharing their journey of engaging all 50,000 global employees though their digital people enablement and learning framework. The framework focuses on helping employees unlock their full potential through the adoption and practice of a digital-first mindset, skills and enabling tools and practices.

Rolls-Royce commits to extending their digital people enablement and learning framework into their supply chain. This will establish a more transparent and co-collaborative ecosystem that focusses on achieving digital transformation together, to meet the growing social and environmental challenges that are materialising as a result of the digital age.

Unipart commits to further developing their employees’ digital skills through their corporate university, ‘The Unipart U’, to ensure both they and the business remain relevant and competitive. This includes developing a series of bespoke e-Learning modules, online Coding programs and further digital development modules, such as a highly sophisticated first-person view game that teaches Unipart’s bespoke operational excellence system to all. This is being supported by significant partnerships with Coventry University and other academic institutions helping to unlock talent right across the business and upskill their people for the future. The Group Chairman has also committed to personally deliver a three hour digital training module to a minimum of 1,000 key employees.

Unipart commits to develop digital products, services and solutions that not only solve customers’ problems but will positively impact society as these technologies create safer working places and have a positive environmental impact by reducing carbon, single use plastic and water.  This work is grounded in Unipart's culture achieved through the Unipart Way, a philosophy of working underpinned by a set of tools and techniques applied across the business to deliver ever improving levels of quality and reductions in waste which benefit both the end customer and wider society.
