Social impacts
  • 73,000 products to foodbanks helping over 1,000 families in need as a result of donations from colleagues and members over the last year
  • Since creating the ‘Regional Communities’ programme in 2015, 166,000 products have been donated to foodbanks, providing enough meals for over 4,000 families in need
  • 234,000 volunteering hours provided by Midcounties Co-operative colleagues in the community over the last 10 years
  • In the last year alone, Midcounties Co-operative colleagues have delivered 36,500 volunteer hours at a financial value of £528,000
  • Over £11million distributed back to the community over the last 10 years
  • Distributed £262,000 to over 550 local causes over the last year
  • Over 9,000 young people engaged with Midcounties programmes with 265 students supported with work experience opportunities over the last year.
  • Reduced energy usage by over 15% since 2010, saving over 7,000 tonnes of CO2

The Midcounties Co-operative is part of a thriving global co-operative movement and puts membership at the heart of all they do. As a values driven business, they are working towards creating a ‘better, fairer world’ by bringing together colleagues and members to build strong local communities. The Midcounties Co-operative has been reaccredited with the CommunityMark in recognition of the strength of its approach to supporting local communities and the deep commitment to community investment across the business.

The Midcounties Co-operative have focused their community investment activities efforts on a range of key areas and each trading group has identified its core community opportunities and factored this into their 3 year plans.  For example, Food Retail have identified local food and working with local suppliers through the 'best of our counties range' to provide locally sourced products and support local suppliers in the community, Healthcare have identified opportunities to support mental health and improve physical health in the community, Co-operative Energy have identified opportunities to support community renewable energy. All senior managers across the business have ambassador roles on local community and business networking committees / boards. 

This enables the Midcounties Co-operative opportunities in the community and ensure that these are considered in community planning.  Since last achieving the CommunityMark in 2014, Midcounties Co-operative has demonstrated progress and commitment to continuous improvement through the on-going success of 20 Regional Community Steering Groups, clear target settings and improved impact evaluation.

Through their DOES values programme, colleagues are kept aware of the positive difference the community investment activities are making in the community and are encouraged through colleague reviews and 1 to 1's to provide examples of activities they have been involved with in the community and the difference they have made at an individual level. Feedback gained through Colleague Councils, Colleague Forums, Managers Conferences, AGM's, half yearly meetings and Leadership Team meetings clearly shows that colleagues are aware and proud of the work the Midcounties Co-operative does in the community.  Regional Community activity has led to increased colleague engagement in the community programme, for example; Cannock Chase saw an 11% increase, Sedgley and Dudley, a 14% increase, a 6% increase at Walsall and an 18% increase in Wolverhampton. Feedback gained from various engagement activity, including Colleague Councils, Regional Community Steering groups and member / colleague events has shown that colleagues are satisfied with their involvement and feel that the activity is making a difference.
