Employee volunteering in Scotland

Business in the Community in Scotland has over a decade's experience of delivering a wide variety of employee volunteering services which channel skills, experience and enthusiasm directly from the workplace into local communities to great effect.

By taking part your business will be part of the biggest employee volunteering movement in Scotland, with the opportunity to learn and share best practice while creating a more engaged, driven and motivated team – all benefiting the local community.

Many of our member companies outsource the management of some or all of their employee volunteering to us, as a cost-effective alternative to internally managed programmes.

We have operated practical one-day volunteering events from 5 to 500 people and built bespoke skills-based programmes for member companies. Whatever your company size or needs – we can help, from simple brokerage to complex full programme operation.

Find out more about:

  • Paired Reading – this volunteering scheme brings together business volunteers and schools to help raise children's literacy through one-to-one or small group reading sessions.

  • Pupil Mentoring – mentoring a young person can be one of the most rewarding ways to develop your skills and experience.

  • Team Challenge – this programme offers businesses in Scotland a simple route and framework to engage employees, build awareness, develop team work and widen involvement in their local communities.

  • Give and Gain Day in Scotland - this annual celebration of the incredible power of employee volunteering gets unprecedented numbers of people out volunteering across the globe.

  • Enterprise Team Challenge - facilitated one-day workshops at Scottish primary or secondary school designed to improve pupils’ awareness, aspirations, and attitude towards the world of work.

  • Employee Volunteering Services Forum - this is an opportunity to learn from other businesses' approach to employee volunteering, to network, and collectively discuss barriers and challenges and how these can be overcome. Each forum has a thematic topic, lasts 3 hours and is hosted by a different member of the group who also presents on their approach and programmes . Also present is an expert speaker on the topic. Here’s what some of our recent volunteers had to say about their experiences:

Lloyds Banking Group

Lloyds employees volunteeringEveryone involved in the Volunteering Day at Cowdenbeath Primary School told me how much they had enjoyed themselves. People actually commented on how well organised the day was compared to Volunteering Projects they had participated in before. They appreciated having a variety of activities and stated that they would have no problem joining similar Volunteering Projects again if they knew [BITC Scotland] was going to be involved. Jan Johnson

“All of us really enjoyed our Volunteering Day at Tollcross Primary School. We completed a large mural along one wall of the school playground, which transformed a drab brick wall into a brightly coloured land and sea scape. It was good fun for us to get involved in something completely different and it was great to get such positive reactions from the staff and children on the day too.” – Louise Sloan, Lloyds Banking Group.

“The Scottish Widows team enjoyed the clear up of the Water of Leith and the best bit was standing back at the end of the day and seeing the results of our hard work! Great sense of achievement. Thanks for a great day!” – Sharon Maisey, Lloyds Banking Group.

Shoosmiths LLP

"At the Employee Volunteering Services Forum I found the meeting of minds from different sectors inspiring and refreshing. It is so interesting to see how different people and organisations approach a common goal like employee volunteering development and I think I will learn a lot from those who have been actively engaged for some time." Marika Franceschi, Partner, Shoosmiths LLP

“Despite the cold damp day, we had a very productive day at Toryglen Primary School and it was great to see the children’s delight and appreciation for the wall mural and log steps which we completed in their playground” – Audrey Cheyne

Royal London Group

“I would like to say that as a Legal Team we thoroughly enjoyed our time out on the fresh air at Balgreen Primary. It was certainly a change of scenery for us. We loved working with the artist (Katie) and enjoyed the progression of the mural throughout the day. A great day and a real sense of achievement – Shona Laidlaw

National Australia Banking Group

Volunteers from the National Australia Banking Group“The team thoroughly enjoyed their day and were heartened to hear that they could make a difference to the lives of the children at Cleeves Primary by helping to improve the community garden”. Lisa Branter

“I am a secondee at NAB and was delighted to get involved in the volunteering day. It really made me feel part of the business and was great to give something back to the community. The beach clean was harder work than I expected, but the sun and team spirit made it very rewarding – especially when we collected over 20 bags of rubbish and saw the physical difference our efforts had made to the beach for the people and wildlife that use it!” – Sarah McDonald
